As an organization committed to donating 15% of gift shop + tour sales through charitable giving (without 501c3 designation as yet, ourselves)—it's perhaps no surprise that our operating margins are slim.
Storage and upkeep for a 2,500+ piece animal collection - the world's tallest, no less - is not short on costs. Cleaning alone (the ongoing expense of which is relatively new as Lisa used to dust every inch of the collection herself!) is both expensive and daunting, as is the justification for maintaining a sprawling, 100+-year-old property for a retired widower.
Yet, the thought of splitting up the collection and/or losing this IYKYK Portland landmark to condo-raising land developers was unbearable. We launched the Giraffe House Memorial Collection & Gallery to bring joy to fans and fellow giraffe lovers and to build a foundation of charitable giving -- but we also know that to get there, we're going to need the help and support of our community. We cannot do it alone.
Every dollar donated will be used to cover our basic operating costs, keeping our doors open, the lights on, and the star of the Giraffe House burning bright. Together, we can grow into a self-sustaining entity that one day has its own legacy.
