Lisa Allen Lybrand and the Lybrand family have been sponsoring Giraffes (and generations of interconnected families of giraffes) at the Oregon Zoo for over 20 years. They've also inspired donations and sponsorship in many friends and family as well.
Scientists estimate that giraffe numbers have been dropping across Africa by about 40% over the past two decades. Two subspecies (the reticulated giraffe and the Masai) remain on the endangered species list.
Habitat loss, diseases transmitted by livestock, civil war, poaching, and the existential threat of climate change endanger giraffe poplulations, and so wildlife conservation was a passion of Lisa's. When the family couldn't afford to make donations, Lisa made sure to volunteer her time.
The Oregon Zoo offers a unique opportunity for individuals to support animal conservation through sponsorships. The Oregon Zoo is one (of 2) organizations sharing 15% of our net tour proceeds along with Portland's Neighborhood House In a 30/f70 split. These allocations represent donations in 2023-4 and our 2025 commitments--but will be subject to change per adjustments to our organizational structure and developing partnerships with other 5013-Cs.
